In a continued effort to foster a safe and inclusive work environment, Nepal Development Research Institute (NDRI) organized a one-day training for its members and staff on "Promoting Awareness for a Respectful Workplace Environment" on Friday, January 10, 2025, at the National Cooperative Federation Conference Hall, Pulchowk, Lalitpur, Nepal. This vital initiative aimed to raise awareness about workplace harassment and provide actionable strategies to cultivate respect and dignity in professional settings, bringing together NDRI members and staff. Moderated by Ms. Ashma Aryal, Outreach and Communication Officer, NDRI, the event focused on sharing knowledge, encouraging dialogue, and developing proactive mechanisms to handle and prevent workplace harassment.
The day began with a warm welcome by Dr. Shankar Shrestha, Executive Director of NDRI, who emphasized the importance of creating a work environment where everyone feels respected, valued, and protected.
Following the welcome, Dr. Manjeshwori Singh, GESI Focal Person at NDRI outlined the program objectives, focusing on raising awareness, identifying different forms of harassment, and strengthening institutional mechanisms to prevent it.
The core sessions were led by expert resource persons Ms. Sabita Koirala and Mr. Gokul Pyakurel. Ms. Sabita Koirala with a Masters degree in Law and specialization in Human Rights and Gender Justice has more than 25 years of experience in the field. Likewise, Mr. Gokul Pyakurel is certified master trainer for capacity development with more than 20 years of experience in the feild. They engaged the participants with an insightful overview of harassment, its impact on mental health, and workplace productivity. Key points included: Recognizing different types of workplace harassment, including verbal, physical, and cyber harassment; Legal frameworks and organizational policies designed to protect employees and promote equity as well as Effective response mechanisms to address complaints and prevent recurrence.
Participants shared real-life stories and experiences, contributing to an open and safe discussion. This storytelling session provided a platform to reflect on workplace dynamics and learn from shared experiences.
In an interactive group exercise, participants explored strategies to create a harassment-free workplace. Ideas revolved around reinforcing reporting mechanisms, encouraging bystander intervention, and cultivating leadership accountability.
The event concluded with a certificate distribution to participants and a heartfelt felicitation for the resource persons. Dr. Krishna Pahari, President of NDRI, delivered the closing remarks, reiterating NDRI’s commitment to maintaining a respectful and empowering workplace. Participants provided positive feedback, noting that the program enhanced their understanding of harassment prevention and response. Many expressed a renewed commitment to fostering a safe and supportive team environment.
NDRI plans to continue such initiatives to build awareness and strengthen workplace policies, ensuring a respectful, inclusive, and harassment-free professional space for all.
